*History, Condition and Comments. There was a newspaper article and photograph of this car and its owner in the September 22, 2002 Wichita Eagle. We will forward that article to the new owner but the following is a summary of the information in the 2002 story as well as additional information that We have obtained. It was in 1940, when the long term owner of this car was 8 years old, that he learned to drive this car, his neighbor lady's car, chugging up and down her driveway in Manchester, Conn. He was 11 or 12 years old when she had him start driving her to the feed store to pick up supplies for her family's farm (who needed a drivers license). And then when he got out of the service in 1956, he bought the car from his neighbor. Shortly thereafter, the car threw a rod (he estimated the car had 300,000 miles on it - would they really go that far?) necessitating a prompt overhaul the engine. The block had been damaged by the rod, so the owner opted for a 32b 4 cylinder engine which was reported to be smoother running due to better balancing. The new engine was professionally rebuilt by a machine shop, with new babbit bearings poured, etc. The car was then put in storage where it sat until the owner moved to Wichita in 1980. In 1984 the car received a whirlwind 1 year restoration. It was a total body off frame restoration with the owner doing the disassembly and clean up, removing every nut and bolt on the car. The body and paint work were professionally done by a shop in Wichita, using black Imron for the ultimate in durability. Another shop in Wichita made the new wooden pieces from white oak. The upholstery, top and side curtains were purchased from Lebaron Bonney. The owner said Bonney was reluctant to sell him the kit with the deluxe seat because they thought it was not correct. He, however was positive that although his car is a Standard, his car originally had the deluxe seat upholstery (he should know) and thinks it was because this car was one of the last 31's built and they were just using up parts that were available. He won out, and the car has the new deluxe seat upholstery as he remembers it to be correct. The owner did the assembly of the professionally rebuilt and new parts. A few items, such as new upholstered quarter trim and some windlacing, have never been installed but will go with the car. The car's odometer is believed to represent the actual mileage on the car since its restoration was completed i n 1985. We just got this Model A in right before the winter storms started hitting Us. As soon as the weather clears, we will be getting more photo and a driving video if the car has not already sold.
